Billy Idol & Steve Stevens Delight at Rock ‘N’ Polo that Smashes Polo Fundraising Records!

Steve Stevens and Billy Idol on stage

Day of Polo, Music and Family Fun Benefits Teens and Young Adults Affected by Cancer in Pacific Palisades

British rocker Billy Idol and legendary guitarist Steve Stevens performed an acoustic set at Teen Cancer America’s annual Rock ’N’ Polo charity event on Saturday, June 20, bringing rock-n-roll glamour and excitement to historic Will Rogers Polo Club in Pacific Palisades. Actor and comedian Michael Rapaport kicked off the event by warmly welcoming the Shapiro Family to the stage.

Idol and Stevens were introduced by Los Angeles Lakers legend and TCA supporter Kareem Abdul-Jabbar. “It was an honor to be here today in support of Teen Cancer America, an organization that has made a profound difference in the lives of young people facing one of life’s toughest challenges,” he said.

On the polo field, the competition featured a USA versus UK matchup featuring English professional polo player Jamie Morrison, an appropriate tie-in to the British roots of the U.S. charity. Teen Cancer America, the nation’s leading non-profit serving teens and young adults affected by cancer, was founded in Los Angeles in 2012 by Roger Daltrey and Pete Townshend of The Who.

This year’s event, which raised close to $500,000, was dedicated to the memory of Graysen Briggs of Phoenix, Ariz., who was diagnosed with a rare form of pancreatic cancer in 2023 and passed away a year later, one month shy of his 16th birthday.  All polo players and volunteers wore Graysen’s hockey jersey number 93 on their shirt sleeves in his honor.

“Two weeks ago, Grayson would have walked the stage graduating high school with all of his friends and teammates,” said Tammi Shapiro, aunt of Graysen and cohost of the event. “We choose to celebrate those milestones and his beautiful life that was cut short by supporting TCA so that we can help more young people. The dollars we raise are being put toward improving care and outcomes for teens and young adults with cancer, so thank you.”

Michele Briggs, Graysen’s mother, added, “When Graysen was going through treatment, we saw firsthand there was a real disconnect in the care for teens–that the gap between children with cancer and adults with cancer was a real thing. A few months ago, John and I had the opportunity to visit a new TCA program in Phoenix, where we live. We were incredibly inspired by the team’s focus on helping young people and their families navigate cancer. We are so grateful that teens in Phoenix and at a growing number of hospitals across the country now have better options because of Teen Cancer America.”

Rock ’N’ Polo’s top sponsors were the Shapiro Family, First Citizens Bank, Business & Pleasure, and Luna Nueva Tequila. This was the first major charity event held at Will Rogers State Historic Park since the January 2025 Palisades fire. Speaking about the Palisades fires, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar remarked, “As many of you know, this community has faced enormous challenges over the past year, whether we’re talking about young people tackling cancer, or the Palisades rebuilding after the devastating fires that touched this area. Today’s gathering is a reminder of the resilience of spirit and the power of coming together to support one another.”

Teen Cancer America Announces ‘The Majesty of Rock’ – An All-Star Spinal Tap Tribute Album to Benefit Young People with Cancer

Spinal Tap "Majesty of Rock" album cover and description

LOS ANGELES  – Teen Cancer America, the national non-profit organization dedicated to improving the lives of teenagers and young adults with cancer, today announced the release of a monumental tribute album, “The Majesty of Rock,” celebrating the legendary mock-rock band Spinal Tap. This officially sanctioned digital album features 32 iconic songs from the Spinal Tap catalog, covered by a diverse and star-studded lineup of acclaimed artists.

Produced by journalist and podcaster Marc Shea, the album boasts an incredible roster of talent, with songs submitted by members of Guns N’ Roses, Foo Fighters, Tool, Queens Of The Stone Age, The Go-Go’s, Mastodon, System Of A Down, Soul Asylum, The Handsome Family, Kyuss, Failure, Vixen, Foreigner, and the Smoking Popes. The collection also features a contribution from the legendary Robyn Hitchcock and a special performance by TCA’s own Play It Back Players.

The album is available for a limited run of 5,000 digital copies, obtainable through a minimum donation of $19.84 to Teen Cancer America, a nod to the 1984 release of the landmark film, This is Spinal Tap

The album can be purchased online at www.teencanceramerica.org/product/spinal-tap. This unique fundraising initiative will directly support Teen Cancer America’s mission to provide specialized facilities and programs for adolescents and young adults with cancer in hospitals across the United States.

“The spirit of Spinal Tap has always been about turning it up to 11, and that’s exactly what we aim to do for young people with cancer,” said Shannon Sullivan, Executive Director of Teen Cancer America. “This tribute album is a fun, powerful way to raise crucial funds and awareness for the unique challenges facing this age group. We are incredibly grateful to the brilliant artists who have lent their talents to this project and to the creators of Spinal Tap for allowing us to celebrate their genius for a cause that is so important.”

Simon Davies, Teen Cancer America Board Member and former Executive Director, helped shepherd the project from its inception. “Having worked alongside Marc from the very beginning of this wild idea, seeing ‘The Majesty of Rock’ come to life is incredibly rewarding and the perfect grace note to my time leading the organization,” said Davies. “This project captures the heart of what we’ve always tried to do at TCA: bring joy and a bit of rock and roll rebellion to the serious fight against cancer. I am so proud of this album and couldn’t be happier to see it launch as I transition to my role on the board.”

The double album grew from a humble beginning into a massive undertaking, fueled by passion for both the music and the cause.

“The entire project started with a simple conversation on a podcast,” said Shea, producer and host of Performance Anxiety on Pantheon Podcasts. “Three and a half years later, we have a double album to honor the musical and comedic legacy of Spinal Tap, the band that gave us ‘going to 11’ as well as raising awareness for spontaneous combustion. I can’t thank the contributors or TCA enough for their support.”

In true Spinal Tap style, a sleeve note by the recently knighted Sir Roger Daltrey CBE, the co-founder with Pete Townshend of Teen Cancer America, said “Marc who? Never heard of him. But if he’s doing this for young people with cancer then he must be the real deal!”

The limited-edition digital album is available for download on the Teen Cancer America website. The minimum donation of $19.84 offers fans a chance to own a piece of rock and roll history while making a significant difference in the lives of young cancer patients.

Sir Roger Daltrey Visits Patients and Staff at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute in Honor of Teen Cancer America Partnership Anniversary

BOSTON (August 26, 2025) – In his first visit to the U.S. since being knighted by His Majesty King Charles III in June, legendary rock icon Roger Daltrey, lead singer of The Who and co-founder of Teen Cancer America (TCA), spent time with young cancer patients and staff at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute on Tuesday to celebrate the 10th anniversary of its partnership with TCA.

“It meant so much to our patients, their families and our team to see Sir Roger today,” said Kimberly
Stegmaier, MD – Chair, Department of Pediatric Oncology at Dana-Farber. “His passion for the work of
Teen Cancer America is inspiring, and we’re truly grateful for his advocacy and leadership.”

Daltrey and bandmate Pete Townshend co-founded Teen Cancer America in 2012 to help bridge the gap
in the U.S. healthcare system between pediatric and adult oncology. TCA serves Adolescent and Young
Adult (AYA) cancer patients by creating specialized programs and spaces that support their unique
emotional, social, and medical needs. TCA initiatives help fund age-appropriate treatment plans,
psychosocial support, peer interaction and connection, creative programs and other services.

Dana-Farber has been a flagship partner with TCA since 2015, pioneering innovative care and support
models for AYA cancer patients. Through the new Dana-Farber Center for Young Adults, which is a
collaboration between pediatric, medical and supportive oncology, patients have access to art and
music therapy, tailored group support, and peer to peer connections in the HomeGoods Young Adult
Lounge. These activities improve outcomes and foster community.

“We are incredibly proud to celebrate 10 years of partnership with Dana-Farber Cancer Institute,” said
Shannon Sullivan, CEO of Teen Cancer America. “Their innovation in the AYA cancer space epitomizes
the mission of TCA and Roger’s vision for what is possible for this unique patient population.”

Daltrey, whose career with The Who began in England in the 1960s, has been a leading patron, advocate
and fundraiser for teen and young adult cancer patients since 1990 when he joined forces with UK-
based Teenage Cancer Trust, which has successfully transformed the standard of AYA cancer care
throughout Britain.

“Teenagers and young adults who are dealing with a cancer diagnosis and doing so at one of the most
vulnerable times of their lives, making the experience all the more difficult,” said Daltrey. “They deserve
the best possible care and support that we can give them.”

Daltrey visited Dana-Farber as The Who prepared to play Fenway Park on Tuesday night, part of the
acclaimed group’s 2025 North American Farewell Tour.

Stupid Cancer and its partners release a statement regarding abortion access for cancer patients

Teen Cancer America Press Release

NEWS RELEASE BY STUPID CANCER, INC.

New York, NY | June 27, 2022 01:36 PM Eastern Daylight Time

The following joint statement was issued today by Stupid Cancer’s Board of Directors and co-signed by Bright Spot Network, Cactus Cancer Society, Cervivor, Elephants and

Tea, Escape, Family Reach, Fuck Cancer, Imerman Angels, Living Beyond Breast Cancer, Teen Cancer America, True North Treks, and The Ulman Foundation.

Stupid Cancer and its Board of Directors is committed to the empowerment of people affected by adolescent and young adult (AYA) cancer. As patient advocacy organizations serving AYA patients, we join the medical community in fully renouncing any efforts to limit or remove access to safe abortion care. Abortion is a safe and essential healthcare right. Patients with cancer may face many difficult choices in their treatment journey. Patients who learn of a cancer diagnosis during pregnancy often must choose between continuing pregnancy (delaying essential life-saving treatments) and termination of pregnancy. Surgeries or medical treatment for cancer that could also result in loss of pregnancy would be considered abortion under certain state laws. This threatens the patient’s ability to receive cancer care in a timely fashion. Additionally, the continued interference of state legislatures into individuals’ personal healthcare decisions undermines the principles of the patient-physician relationship. These decisions are personal and should be made by patients in discussion with their medical team and not limited by legal consideration.

S.E.E. Summit to showcase game-changing potential of Liquid Biopsy in early Cancer Detection

Teen Cancer America Press Release
  • Teen Cancer America and Jamie Reno host virtual event featuring global leaders in breakthrough cancer biotechnology
  • The Summit takes place on Thursday, April 21 beginning at 12 p.m. ET, 9 a.m. PT.
  • Online attendance is free, and registration is available at this jreno@san.rr.com

LOS ANGELES (April 4, 2022) – Advancements in liquid biopsies, enabling safer, easier and earlier detection of cancer, is the focus of the inaugural S.E.E. Summit, a virtual conference on April 21, 2022.  Convened by Teen Cancer America (TCA), the summit will feature presentations by the leading researchers and oncologists from biotechnology companies that are turning the game-changing promise of liquid biopsies into reality. The presentations will be followed by an open panel discussion.

Liquid biopsies are blood tests designed to identify biomarkers in the blood that can detect cancer very early. Breakthroughs in genomics have accelerated the potential for liquid biopsies to change the paradigm for cancer screening, diagnosis and treatment as a non-invasive alternative to tissue biopsy.

The S.E.E. Summit is the first event to bring liquid biopsy out of stealth mode and begin a national dialogue about this technology’s potential for cancer patients.

The primary goal is to share information about this growing sector in a way that scientists appreciate but consumers, healthcare professionals, potential investors and the media can also understand. Presenters and panel discussion participants will include preeminent liquid biopsy experts from Caris Life Sciences, Exact Sciences/Thrive, Grail, Guardant, IV BioHoldings (IVBH), Natera, Pillar Biosciences and StageZero Life Sciences.

The online conference will feature pre-recorded presentations from the participating companies, followed by a live, independent panel of scientists, oncologists, patients, patient advocates and other stakeholders. The summit is produced by The Special Events Company, a world-class media group that has extensive experience in biotech and healthcare.

“Liquid biopsy research is aligned with President Biden’s ‘Moonshot’ cancer initiative which calls for a focus on prevention and early detection,” said Simon Davies, Executive Director of TCA, the national non-profit co-founded by Roger Daltrey and Pete Townshend of the legendary rock band, The Who. “While our charity’s mission is to serve teens and young adults with cancer, where late detection and misdiagnosis is not uncommon, liquid biopsy is a major step forward in cancer detection among all age groups, and we are excited to shine a light on this important work.”

Equity and access are primary objectives in the development of liquid biopsies. The American Cancer Society estimates there will be 1.9 million new cancer cases in the U.S. in 2022. Due to the pandemic, nearly 10 million cancer screenings were missed in 2020, disproportionately impacting individuals from marginalized populations, potentially leading to increased diagnoses of late-stage cancers.

Due to the lower cost, non-invasiveness and reduced time required for screenings, liquid biopsies can have a significant impact on cancer detection, early treatment and outcomes for at-risk populations.

“Liquid biopsies have reached a tipping point,” said S.E.E. Summit co-creator Jamie Reno, an acclaimed journalist, bestselling author, patient advocate and three-time survivor of stage IV cancer. “There is still much work to be done in the lab, in clinical trials, and in the clinic, but the evidence overwhelmingly shows that this technology works. Once people understand how safe, easy and accurate these tests are becoming, then we will see the full potential of this new science.”

According to Precedence Research, the liquid biopsy market, valued at $7.1 billion in 2020, is expected to grow at an annual rate of 14%, topping $26.2 billion by 2030.

The organizations participating in the S.E.E. Summit plan to extend the program into a series of educational media initiatives to educate and inform cancer patients, healthcare professionals, and the general public.

The event takes place on Thursday, April 21 beginning at 12 p.m. ET, 9 a.m. PT.

Online attendance is free, and registration is available at this

First Citizens Bank 2020 Holiday Giving Initiative for Young People With Cancer

Teen Cancer America Press Release

RALEIGH, N.C., Dec. 01, 2020 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) — Join with First Citizens Bank this holiday season in giving hope to teens and young adults with cancer.

Through Dec. 31, 2020, First Citizens encourages customers, friends and families to make a donation to national nonprofit Teen Cancer America (TCA). TCA works to increase the number of cancer care facilities and specialized treatment programs for teens and young adults.

“Month in, month out, just as many teens and young adults are being diagnosed as ever; cancer doesn’t go on lockdown,” said Jeff Ward, First Citizens chief strategy officer and TCA board member. “That’s why First Citizens is stepping up and encouraging our communities and associates to support the work of TCA, as they can, this holiday season.”

How To Participate

Most hospitals don’t have special cancer programs or facilities for 13 – 24-year-olds, who are typically treated in units for children or older adults. Teen Cancer America bridges the gap — with dedicated, state-of-the-art programs and facilities to meet the unique needs of this age group.

“Since 2015, First Citizens has worked closely with Teen Cancer America to bring young people with cancer better treatment and supportive communities,” Ward said. “We’re proud to continue to assist this life-changing organization. Please join us in donating to TCA to provide a brighter new year for teen patients and their families. Let’s keep making a difference – together.”

A donation for TCA:

  • Helps build spaces in hospitals just for teens and young adults to improve their oncology care.
  • Provides services and programs that impact and enhance the hospital experience for young people.
  • Allows TCA to create music programs, health and wellness workshops, community building events and more.

First Citizens’ 2020 holiday initiative is a continuation of its largest-ever philanthropic endeavor for TCA. The bank has donated over $3 million towards specialized treatment centers in the communities it serves.

Currently, First Citizens partners with TCA to support five hospitals in the Southeast, including Duke Cancer Institute in Durham, N.C.; UNC Lineberger Comprehensive Cancer Center in Chapel Hill, N.C.; Monroe Carell Jr. Children’s Hospital at Vanderbilt in Nashville, Tenn.; Prisma Health Cancer Institute in Greenville, S.C.; and Bon Secours St. Francis Health System also in Greenville, S.C.

First Citizens and Teen Cancer America are also talking with other major medical centers throughout the bank’s markets about establishing new TCA programs. Money raised by First Citizens for TCA goes directly to local partner hospitals.

About Teen Cancer America

Founded by rock icons Roger Daltrey and Pete Townshend of The Who, Teen Cancer America seeks to bridge the gap between pediatric and adult oncology care by helping the health providers and health systems develop specialized programs and facilities for this age group. TCA brings together physicians and allied healthcare professionals in both pediatric and adult oncology. Age-targeted care for this population is necessary for medical and appropriate psychosocial development. Outcomes associated with some cancers that target this age group have not improved in over 30 years. Teens and young adults with cancer are long overdue for an upgrade and TCA can hopefully light the fire in America’s health systems.
