My name’s Christina and I’m currently in my second-year Master’s program in Instructional Technology and Media student at Teachers College of Columbia University in New York City. I was diagnosed with breast cancer at age of 24 during the end of my second year of teaching. During my diagnosis, I went through the works, including surgery, chemotherapy, and radiation at the University of North Carolina (UNC), my alma mater to treat my illness. UNC was of the first U.S. healthcare centers with an Adolescent and Young Adult Cancer Support program. UNC Lineberger Cancer Center provided me with the opportunity to center my thoughts and feelings and engage in activities with other young adult survivors in a fun and meaningful way. Because of this program, I feel empowered to share my story, and with Teen Cancer America, help other adolescents and young adults gain support beneficial to their recoveries, inside and outside of the hospital.
