In December 2018, University Hospital in San Antonio opened one of Texas’ largest adolescent and young adult (AYA) inpatient units, allowing treatment to become very focused and specialized.
The AYA program, in partnership with the University of Texas Health Science Center School of Medicine in San Antonio, is expanding access to clinical trials for 15 to 39 year olds often left out of critical, life-saving research studies.
Dedicated AYA staff connect patients with needed services including financial assistance, fertility counseling, educational support and help with issues uniquely faced by young adults fighting cancer.
The lounge funded by Teen Cancer America aids in fighting the isolation that often comes with a cancer diagnosis. It’s a central meeting place where patients take a break from being sick by just hanging out, sipping coffee, playing games, and sharing stories with others who understand their journey.
