Melanoma And Skin Cancer Awareness Month – Why You Should Care

The month of May is Skin Cancer Awareness Month. Melanoma is the most common cancer for young adults (aged 25 to 29)

You may be asking yourself, “why should this be important to me?” Some people (especially teenagers and young adults) spend a majority of their Spring and Summer time in the sun.

Diagnosing skin cancer early can save your life, so it’s vital to know what you’re looking for!

How to protect yourself?

Cover You Skin!
There are more than a few ways to cover yourself, so just think about the easy stuff. Throw on a long-sleeved shirt or a top that has a collar. Wear pants or long shorts to block excess rays
Wear A Hat
Whether it’s a fresh fitted or a snap-back baseball cap, fedora, or scarf, wear something to keep the heat off your scalp, neck and shoulders.
Slap On That Sunscreen!
We aren’t talking a little bit – don’t be shy with that sunscreen! Make sure when you apply, to also reapply regularly. Something at least SPF30+ will be sufficient (if your skin type requires something more, do what you need).
Chill Out In The Shade
Let’s face it, there’s nothing like having fun in the sun, but everything in moderation. The sun’s rays are usually the strongest between 11am to 3pm (that’s usually the hottest part of the day). Take time to find a shady spot and avoid the sun for a few hours. Read a book, FaceTime with a friend and relax. (If you’re tech savvy, there’s a connected device that tells you when you’ve had too much UV exposure! Very cool!)
Throw On Some Shades
Your eyes need protection too! Slip on your fav pair of sunglasses. (Make sure they’re UV protected). Not only is your vision at risk when you go commando, but the areas around your eyes are just as sensitive!
Fake N’ Bake
Before you think about jumping in a tanning bed, think about doing a spray-on tan. Hey, we didn’t say “go orange,” but it would be wise to consider alternatives. Just because it’s not the ‘real thing’ doesn’t mean it still doesn’t look good!
