What kind of music do you love, and who are some of your favorite artists or bands?
I have a very eclectic taste in music. The artists that stay in rotation are in the Neo-Soul, R&B/Soul, Alternative Rock, and Electronic genres.
What was your relationship with music like before your cancer diagnosis?
Growing up I saw music as a vessel for uplifting mood, celebrating a milestone, or passing the time while completing household chores. I can recall making playlists by recording songs from the radio on cassettes, cds, or even playing around with computer programs that incorporated ways to create music or use characters to do so (I loved “The Sims”). I have to say music is serving as that vessel till this day!
Can you share a little bit about your cancer story?
In 2005, at the age of 16 I was diagnosed with Stage III – Ovarian Cancer. Being personally impacted by a cancer diagnosis while “coming of age” has been a difficult road to navigate during survivorship. However, my experiences have been the catalyst for much of the work I do as an advocate for AYA Cancer Survivorship. I hope that my efforts will make a difference for other fighters and survivors aging through transitions of care – so they can live the best life they deserve.
What led you to join Play It Back, and what are you hoping to get out of the experience?
I was so excited to find out about the Play it Back program because, I’ve always desired to bring the sounds I hear in my head to life. By joining, I now get to dedicate time to expand my knowledge and skill for a new creative outlet. I also have an opportunity to meet other creatives who are sharing their musical talents as well. It’s been a great source personal growth and place of community.
If you had to describe the kind of music you make or want to make, how would you describe it?
The music I make is influenced by what I am listening to at the time. When I began I was listening to Barry White and Teddy Pendergrass. As I am becoming more familiar with music production/beat making, I am learning how to have FUN in the process! Lately my sound has been Lo-fi and Electronic but, I’m excited to see how things will improve from where I initially began.
